Description

Visit the Vietnamese Village on Galang Island, Batam City, Riau Province or Riau Islands. This location was once a silent witness to the dark history of hundreds of thousands of refugees from Vietnam who came to this place. Galang Island was initially uninhabited until Vietnamese people came to evacuate. The attraction of Galang Island is that tourists will be pampered by the beauty of the city and island and can enjoy the natural beauty, there is also the unique culture of the local community because it consists of multi-ethnic groups. Apart from this tourist attraction, Galang Island is also visited by many tourists on weekends because of the beautiful Melur beach in the western part of the island and Batam is very strategic for continuing tours to neighboring countries because it borders Singapore. In the 1980s, Galang Island suddenly became famous because this island became a topic of discussion at the United Nations because thousands of refugee boats from Vietnam left their country for Galang Island. This Vietnamese village is similar to a village in Indonesia in general, previously used to accommodate refugees who were victims of the Vietnamese civil war. On Galang Island, a refugee camp was then established, opening up approximately 80 hectares of land for those who were mostly from Vietnam. Previously, the 'boat people' landed in several areas in the Riau Islands, such as Tanjungpinang, Natuna Island, Tarempa, Anambas, and so on. According to historical records, there were around 250 thousand refugees from Vietnam in the Galang Island camp and during the 10-year refugee camp, they were provided with health facilities, schools and several places of worship. There were also refugees who died there who were then buried in the camp area. They came to Galang Island by boat in poor condition. They boarded a large boat with around 40 to 100 refugees traveling cramped in one small boat and floating for months in the China Sea without a clear destination due to the conditions of the Civil War in Vietnam. As we know, Vietnam Village is a former refugee camp for Vietnamese citizens who were victims of the 1975-1996 war. During this long period of time, many relics that can be seen directly, such as temples, churches, even the places where they lived when they were displaced, are still intact today. Tourist activities when arriving in a Vietnamese village, tourists will be guided to visit historical places to explore. Also explore Melur Beach and Burma Buddhist Temple
